The United States of America is located in North America. On its northern border lies Canada. On its southern border, México. Its eastern and western borders are marked by oceans — the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The United States is the world’s fourth-largest country by area, covering an area of 9,833,520 square kilometers (3,796,742 square miles). The country spans nine times zones across its constituent states, territories, and outlying islands. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or time zone for the Unites States is UTC-4 through UTC-11, and UTC+10. Daylight Saving Time is observed in all but two of its states — Arizona and Hawai‘i — and none of its territories or outlying islands.
The country’s official name is the United States of America, though it is commonly called the United States, the US, or USA. There are 50 states, plus five unincorporated territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and nine minor outlying islands. Population is 331,893,745 (2021 census estimates), making it the world’s third most populous country after China and India. Washington, D.C., a federal district, is the nation’s capital, New York City is its largest city. The largest state by area is Alaska, by population is California. The national language of the United States is English (American English).
The currency of the Unites States is the U.S. Dollar (USD), the world’s primary reserve currency. The country has a real GDP of US$25.35 trillion (2022 estimate), the world’s second-highest after China. Exports include petroleum (oil), cars and vehicle parts, aircraft and aircraft parts, integrated circuits, medical instruments, and agricultural products (soybeans, corn, wheat, poultry, pork, and cotton).
The United States declared independence from Great Britain on 4 July 1776. Its United States Declaration of Independence (formal title “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America”) was adopted on the same day. 4 July is recognized as Independence Day (also called Fourth of July) in the country.
