Germany is located in the central portion of western Europe. On its northern border lies the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea. On its southern border, Austria and Switzerland. To the east are Poland and the Czech Republic. To the west are the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, and France. Germany is the world’s 63rd-largest country, covering an area of 357,600 square kilometers (138,100 square miles). Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or time zone for Germany is UTC+1. Germany observes Daylight Saving Time.
The country’s official name is the Federal Republic of Germany. The capital of Germany is Berlin, which is also its largest city. The country’s population is 84 million (2023 estimate). Germany’s official language is German.
The currency of Germany is the Euro (EUR). The country has a real GDP of US$4.4 trillion (2021 estimate). Exports include aircraft, automobiles and vehicle parts, electronics and electrical parts, medicines and medical products, vaccines, metals, rubber, plastics, and food products.
The German Empire was inaugurated in 1871. After World War II, Germany was split into four zones. Then, in 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany (FRG)) was formed on 23 May, followed by the establishment of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany (GDR)) on 7 October. East and West Germany were reunified on 3 October 1990. 3 October is a national holiday known as German Unity Day.
What do the colors of the German flag mean?
The colors of the German flag are black, red, and gold. Black represents the determination and dignity of the German people. Red stands for valor, strength, and bravery. Gold signifies power, prestige, and wealth. The colors are often said to have their origins in the medieval banner of the Holy Roman Empire.
