Welcome to Estonia!

Estonia is located in northeastern Europe. On its northern border lies the Gulf of Finland; further north lies Finland. On its southern border, Latvia. Russia marks its eastern border. To the west is the Baltic Sea, and beyond it, Sweden. Estonia is the world’s 129th-largest country, covering an area of 45,339 square kilometers (17,505 square miles). Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or time zone for Estonia is UTC+2. The country observes Daylight Saving Time.

The country’s official name is the Republic of Estonia. The capital of Estonia is Tallinn, which is also its largest city. Its population is 1,331,824 (2021 census). Estonia’s official language is Estonian. Russian is widely spoken.

The currency of Estonia is the Euro (EUR). The country has a real GDP of US$41.8 billion (2023 estimate). Exports include machinery, paper, wood, textiles, chemical products, metals, furniture, and technology.

Estonia declared independence twice; first from Soviet Russia on 24 February 1918, and again from the Soviet Union (Russia) on 20 August 1991, which was recognized on 6 September 1991. 20 August is a national holiday known as Independence Day.

What do the colors of the Estonian flag mean?

The colors of the Estonian flag  are blue, black, and white. Blue represents the clear skies, lakes, and the Baltic Sea. Black, the fertile soil and dark, thick forests. White signifies the winter snow and the white nights of summer. It is acknowledged that there are several different versions of what the colors mean.
