Does one really need a reason to go to Hawai`i?
It had been 24 years since my first visit to O`ahu. My impression of the island back then was marred by the fact that our hotel in Waikiki featured the near-constant sound of tour buses arriving day and night, and the smell of their diesel exhaust wafting up and into our hotel room. It felt too much like being in a big city back on the mainland. This time, however, would be different. This time I’d be visiting with friends who live on the island, and hanging out with more friends from back home who had had their trip planned for them.
For the flight to O`ahu, I used United Mileage Plus miles. It is very fitting that it was on that first trip to Hawai`i 24 years ago where one of the stewardesses (flight attendants, as they are now called) gave me an application to enroll in United’s rewards program. I told myself then that once I accumulated enough miles, I would use them for a trip back to Hawai`i. And now here I am, getting to reap the fruits of nearly a quarter century of labor! (Actually, I had accumulated enough miles for this trip several years ago. It just took all that time for the stars to align for me to be able to come back to Hawai`i.)
