Welcome to Finland!
Finland is located in Northern Europe. On its northern border lies Norway. On its eastern border, Russia. Its southern border is marked by the Gulf of Finland. Sweden and the Gulf of Bothnia are to the west. Finland is the world’s sixty-fifth-largest country, covering an area of 338,455 square kilometers (130,678 square miles). Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or time zone for Finland is UTC+2. Daylight Saving Time is observed throughout the country.
The capital of Finland is Helsinki, also its largest city. The country’s population is 5,536,146 million (2020 estimate). Finland’s official languages are Finnish and Swedish. Sámi and Karelian are also widely spoken.
The currency of Finland was the markka until 2002, when the Euro (EUR) was officially adopted. The country has a real GDP of US$257 billion (2020 estimate). Exports include shipbuilding, automobiles, electronics/electrical equipment, petroleum, metals (such as copper, steel, and chromium), timber, pulp, and paper.
Finland declared independence from Russia on 6 December 1917. 6 December is a national public holiday known as Independence Day.
